What causes graying of hair?
Your hair follicles contain pigmentation cells known as melanocytes. These melanocytes produce a substance called as melanin which gives our hair its natural color. The higher the melanin content your hair follicles will produce, the darker your hair color will be. Similarly, the lower the melanin content produced by your hair follicles, the lighter your hair color will be. As our age advances, there is a decrease in the number of melanocytes, which results in loss of hair color and thus gray hair start appearing. When the melanin count decreases considerably at a young age, premature graying of hair is observed.
